Andrew Goodwins theory
Andrew Goodwin identifies 5 key aspects of music videos that the audience should look out for when watching. They are:
. Thought beats
. Narrative and performance
. The star image
. Relation of visuals to song
. Technical aspects of music video
Music videos tend to include a demonstration of a typical genre characteristic. For example: a video of a stage performance is typical for a heavy metal music video, a dance routine is typical for a dance/pop music video and a bikini clad and flashy sports cars is typical for a rap video. Music videos also correlate with film genres, this is known as inter sexuality. Many heavy rock songs are influenced by horror films.
There are frequent references to the notion of looking and voyeuristic treatment of the female body. The notion of looking includes men or women being portrayed seductively or if there is eye contact with the camera. The notion of looking can also be referenced by the use of props. E.G mirrors, cameras. Voyeurism is widely used to sell the artists music through sex appeal, a recent example being Miley Cyrus. Voyeurism today is only shown at one angle. You normally do not see males doing it, only females.
There should normally be a succinct relationship between music and visuals. e.g illustrative, amplifying, contradicting. This can be seen in killer / papa was a rolling by George Michael.
The record label which the artist is assigned to tends to have certain demands. They often include the needs for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist will have a visual style which recurs across their work. An example of a visual style could be Lady Gaga as she is always wearing quirky clothes.

There is often inter sexual references to films, TV, programmes and other music videos. Destinys child doing independent women referencing charlies angels. Will Smith doing Men in Black for the film in Black. There is inter-sexuality in the Wombats video for "my circuit board" city referencing a video game.
